Well

-It comes in way too slow as it takes thirty seconds for the main melody to actually kick into full gear. The piano is very static and stays with the same beat for most of the first two minutes. This makes the song feel very dull and uninventive. Also if at all possible make it multi-layered with either different octaves or complimenting rythms to add effect to the trance.

-Overall it's just way too slow and repetitive for me. If you want to really get into trance songs I would suggest making them a little less in length and speed it up a lot.

Dj-GST responds:

Slow fade in was for slow buildup, I like it.

K...

Trance songs are long and slow progressing, I know that much, so making it shorter would be dumb.

Trance isn't supposed to be fast man. When you listen to it it's suppoesed to feel like your in a trance, hence the genre.

If you want fast go listen to some Speedcore or something.

Great work

:00-:38 -Nice calm space intro that was cool and made me want to listen more. The pause gives it a nice break effect to bring you into the song too.

:40-1:20 -I loved the slow paced shuffle/static that you used to build momentum.

1:21-2:03 -I didn't however like how long it actually took to get into the actual instrumentation. Try shortening the overall intro time to bring the key aspect of the melody into the song sooner.

2:04-2:45 -Replaying the melody without any variation makes the song drag on even more. It's unneeded and could of been done without. Would of also helped with the bit-rate that is painfully low.

2:46-2:55 -Interesting robotic part of the song. I know it's used throughout but being played without the melody makes it sound more prominent and bold. I'd like to see something like this in the future.

3:44-5:07 -Very interesting move with the song but it works nicely with the whole theme of the song.

5:08-6:39 -Once again you could of done one theme playthrough and it would of sounded just as good but helped progress the song faster.

6:40-7:02 -The robotic feel is brought out again

-Sorry if I was a bit too nit-picky but I liked how you gave an overall outline that helped me break the song apart and review sections.

-I loved the song overall and like I said it could of been shortened just a little bit to progress the song faster and allow for a higher quality upload.

Cornilious responds:

Man, I love me my intros...
Anyway I want to keep the beginning the same, but maybe I'll change the partial instrumentation section in the intro to half of the full progression. I'll see how it sounds.

You're right about the repeats: repetition without variation is boring and I regret that now looking back. I'll be sure to replace the current file with a shorter, higher quality upload with some added variation (maybe the lead synth changing its melody to a solo or fancy arpeggiation).

Ugh, the bitrate was painful for me to upload. Would have loved to do something higher than the nasty 128kbps. But, if someone really cared enough for it I could send them higher quality files. So, not as big of a deal as it is a pain in the ass I guess.

Nit picky? Hell, I like it when people pick apart my songs. It gives me something specific to work on! I think from now on I'll be giving an outline, especially if it's a longer song. Thanks for the review!

Owww

-The lead progression is way too loud and brash on the ears. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing but it gets annoying after a couple of times. Which makes what Shellac said so true. It would work better as an annoying alarm to wake you up rather than an actual ringtone. If you ever do make it into a full song make it a little less loud.

Nice

-I really liked the fast paced first twelve seconds that jumped at you and faded out with a "Pop". This really allowed for the piano to build with an ebb and flow. Meshing brilliantly with the soft, gentle melody.

-You gave this a nice build which seems pre-planned. Everything worked well except for the nasty sounding snare you put in at the end. It does nothing for the melody or the build-up. It's so conflicting with everything else that you did which makes me question why you decided to put it in.

-I would like to see more bass and less treble with additional harmonies to continue making things flow nicely. I really liked what you had at about the minute mark. Bring elements similar to this is what i'm trying to convey.

mmmburgers responds:

Thanks for the review. I've changed much of the build up to the climax of the song. It sounds a little different from what it does now in this preview. But it's still a WIP, and the feedback is great. Thanks!

Get me some Kool-Aid

-I enjoyed listening to this. I had to go over it three times before I could even review it. It's quite lengthy which makes it a tad bit difficult to review.

-That being said even though I listened to it repeatedly it didn't get boring or repetitive. This is what really suprised me since most long songs get repetitive at some points. Even using the same chord you put enough dimension into it with complicated multi-layer work.

-Reason is an expensive audio program and it really shows in some of your work. Did you use Reason 4 or an older model?

-Review Request Club

MixyRecords responds:

Thanks, I appreciate you taking time to review. I'm glad I was able to make the song intresting enough. That was my goal with all the effects.

I used Reason 3 but I got it for free because a producer friend I know hooked me up.

Again i appreciate the review

Trance?

-I'm a little confused. It says trance in file info but you say it's house. It's completely irrelevant anyhow since it's just a demo and the song can be changed anyway.

-Good melody with many filter combinations that slowly progresses as you go along. It sounds great in concept but when it actually plays out a few times it just feels a little overdone in spots. I'm not saying completely rework it but it could use a tune-up that can make the song feel fresh even after several playthroughs.

aliaspharow responds:

Yeah i know... i'm pretty confused myself

Very long

-It's quite understandable for the bit-rate to be low with the sheer length of this song. Try limiting your work to somewhere between 3-5 minutes so you don't have to worry about bit-rate and can upload higher quality tracks.

-It's a bit too frenetic and fast paced overall through the song. There weren't enough breaks or additional slow elements to balance out the drums.

-Even with that aspect I did like how eerie it felt in the later stages of the song. It has potential to have a flash video made for it if someone took the time to build around it.

shizeet responds:

Yeah, normally I don't compose stuff nearly this long. But I also rarely set time limits for most of my stuff - just keep on going until I feel it's fairly finished heh. The criticism about lack of breaks and such is understandable; I did want to have some less groove driven, slower parts, but the program I used for this is rather "gridlocked" so it's kind of hard to do that convincingly without recording it live. Thanks for the review.

Well

-I think you did a really sweet thing for your mother. Mom's do a lot of work and they need some appreciation every now and then.

-Nice melody that is very light and heart warming. There is much variety as far as keys used which is good since it makes it more enjoyable to listen to.

-It would sound much better if it was mastered in an audio program. Not sure which key of the piano it was but it sounded a little off to me. Other than that it's simple and doesn't need anything changed as far as song make-up.

Calamaistr responds:

No idea how to master but lately ive been tampering around a bit with reverb, cant say i like it though so i wont use it more often but atleast ive been trying to get a bit better at FL again i guess.

Thanks for the review.

Well

-It's hard to judge trance since it tends to have a continuous melody overall. I liked how you incorporated cymbals at key points in the song. It's an underused instrument that only can help add more of a dynamic kick to everything else that you are doing.

-I'd still like to point out that it is very repetitive in the melody. Try changing it up. It will only make the song more memorable if it has twists and turns that nobody expects. Undertones maybe (I personally like this sort of touch). It's subtle but it can dramatically change how a song can play through your mind.

Decibel responds:

Thanks for your input, I will get to work as soon as possible :D

Miscellaneous

-It really isn't true techno so I would think of it more as just a miscellaneous song. It mixes and matches elements from a couple different genres so it's hard to classify.

-Very nice build-up by increasing the volume while keeping primarily the same beat and melody throughout. Brought about by the fade at about a minute to bring it back to where it was at the start. I felt it gave it a dimension of change. It allowed you to bring it back at a much higher level than it was at before.

-The ending was just dragged out too long for it to be a loop. I would suggest cropping off un-needed parts of songs in the future.

KieranNG responds:

It's Acid Techno.

I'm a pretty laid back person. Like some things about the new design but still like a lot of things from the old one :/
